    No, he knew it was a hive since a little earlier in the movie, as him and Vada were going through the woods and found that beehive hanging on a tree branch where he knew it was a beehive. After that, he wanted to take rocks and knock it down off the branch which him and Vada did and Thomas J. got it knocked down. Then Vada lost her ring as she was throwing rocks at the hive so they tried finding it but, the bees scared them away so here, he was going to try again to find the ring.

    That's true that he was allergic to bees but also, if someone gets stung by a huge amount of bees (like Thomas J.) did, they would die too.

    Maybe he was either trying to see if the ring was under the hive or he was just checking if the bees were in there so he could search around if they weren't in their hive.
