Here is a short video of what the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine fluid trainer sounds like. This is just to help one compare the noise against other trainers. Update: After many, many miles on this trainer, the tension screw was getting hard to turn. I contacted Kurt Kinetic about it and within a few days had a new part! Their customer service is outstanding and I would easily buy another trainer from them. They really stand behind their product.

  • thanks, how do you adjust the resistance?

  • @jcc2150 - The resistance is based on speed. So you shift gears on your bike for more resistance. The trainer is calibrated to try to simulate actual resistance at given speeds. For example, riding at 20 mph on the trainer takes roughly the same power output required to ride 20 mph on flat road for the average sized rider. The KK website has the power charts for various speeds and all the data on how those values are calculated.

  • has the roller some treads? mine has it gives the friction but also vibration and noise alot .since yu are in a static position and ur body is trying to moving sideways u feel comfortable? for me is kind of painful ( not KK)

  • @rolandgarroz - no, the roller is smooth and relies on the tension against the tire for proper friction. It rolls smooth. The static position doesn't bother me much, but it does bother others. KK does make the "Rock and Roll" model that allows some movement side-to-side. I hear it is good, but have never tried one myself. If you want more freedom of movement, rollers are the other option. They are more difficult to ride though and take practice.

  • I just got it and never owned a Trainer before. I know they are decently loud but mine is pretty loud. Also, I get a strong Vibration throughout the frame, I do something wrong? Is it like this for the KK Pro?

  • @mizerathom - You shouldn't be getting strong vibrations. What kind of tire are you using? It isn't a knobby is it? Is your wheel straight? Make sure the roller is tensioned against the tire according to the instructions too. It should feel smooth with little to no vibration. If all of that is fine and you still have problems, you might want to contact KK to see if they can help.

  • Ive had one for about 6 or 7 years now and the only difference I can tell between mine and yours is the color. (Mine is grey) I've used it through the winter during those years, with zero maintenance and it's still going as strong today as when I first bought it.

  • very helpful, thanks!

  • Not a huge fan of your pedal technique at all

  • Great video!!!

I have a hybrid tire, smooth 6/12 " and knobby on the sides. Two questions:

    1) Is there any reason I wouldn't want to try this with a Kurt Kinetic trainer besides noise?

    2) Is their any store in the NYC area (five boroughs) that would have one on display so I can try it w/my bike?

  • @FPChris It's not that loud! Really. I just got one and it's nothing like as loud as in this video. The pressure of the roller on the tyre can be adjusted via a knob at the back of the unit.

  • I just got one of these and it's _much_ quieter than apparent in this video (one of my concerns prior to purchasing). Maybe the video camera microphone is directional and pointed right at the Road Machine here? Really, mine is much, much quieter and also has no clicking sound (that's the bike making the clicks).
