I always liked it when the rhythm groove flowed from the early years of recorded blues, when the meter wasn't necessarily triple ...suggests duple, but lays in between. In these groove's the music´s coming more from non-western roots, rather than equidistant "european" eigth notes. I think that because of the subtlety required, this slipped away as the amplification became greater. It was lost to the generation of players in the 1960s. That said, obviously, I grew up hearing a lot of the blues of that era and still enjoy much of it.
At any moment, Ben, Hugh, or I were free to move through one feel to the other. At those points, the groove was everything, and thinking about the things written above would just be distraction from the subtleties goin' on.
The Blue Riders champion the East Coast Piedmont style of blues, a style of music first popularized by artists like Blind Boy Fuller, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie McTell and Blind Blake...lesser known Ishman Bracey...greats like Willie Dixon.
It was Hubert Sumlin's guitar on Howlin' Wolf's original Chess recordings of The Red Rooster. Check out Otis Rush doing it too. BIG MAMA THORNTON 's recording is killin'. Obscure, but interesting is the RCA recording by Sam Cooke!

This 1996 clip is from Virginia, U.S.A.
