One of the troopers steps on it as he comes down the stairs, it sparks and wounds him. This also makes the vacuum cleaner become their enemy for a short period.
I think the others rush to help him and it carries on from there...

Yes, they switch to knives. See Anna Navarre around 3:50. In this recording I forgot to make sure Simons had exhausted his rounds which is why he kills me at the end. If he'd had a knife I'd have been able to lock him in the cupboard properly.
