It's done that way in most of Europe & the world. The purpose is to distinguish a 7 from a 1, even if the person is in a hurry. That way it is clear which number is which.

@Scott111188 Of that ever happens, then you need to go into the negative numbers. You pretend that the smaller number from above has another hundred to carry over, when it doesn't. Then you subtract and add a dash at the end of the number to show its negative. Hope this helped,

Hi,

Say you a subtracting a 3 digit number from a 3 digit number, what do you do when you get to the end of the numbers and you still need to borrow? As there isn't anything infront of the number that you need to make larger than the digit below it.

or on your first example. Instead of 33,220-399, it's easier to just do 33,220-400.Easy math, 32,820. then just add 1 to it since we added 1 to the bottom, and you get 32,821. Using this strategy you should be able to do any complex subtractions in your head and give an answer without even showing your work.

Long subtraction gives me a headache. I wanted to see if anyone figured out the easy way to to this stuff. It's easier to just get rid of the tough numbers and make it simpler. For instance 3201-502 is easier to do as 3200-500. Easy, 2700. Then subtract 2 (cause we took it away from the bottom) then add 1 (cause we took it away from the top) and 2700-2=2698, +1 = 2699. I can do most complex addition and subtraction in my head that people need calculators for, or a couple minutes of borrowing.
