On March 12, 2011, I took a class in skeleton sledding. This was offered by the Whistler Sliding Center - site of the bobsled, luge, and skeleton competitions of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. At the end of the classroom session each student made two runs down the lower third of the track from curve 11 to curve 16. We all went down in the classic skeleton sled position: on our stomach with our arms along our torso and our hands gripping the handles of the sled. Our face is just a few inches above the ice track. This is my first run, and the video was taken at the finish (the uphill portion of the track to slow vehicles down). I did some ping-ponging on this section of the track (i.e., ricocheting off the walls). On this run I attained a top speed of 96.3 kilometers per hour or about 59.7 miles per hour.
