Hyper-V can be downloaded free and installed standalone in which case it basically a bare-metal hypervisor and a command shell to configure it. Or you can install it as a role in windows server 2008 64 bit edition in which case it's still a hypervisor but you've got windows server to control it with.
I'm not sure which free product of VMware you meant, because now both ESXi and VMware Server (formerly gsx) is free.
Hyper-V is like a mixture of both: unlike ESX(i) it runs on a full-featured os like VMware Server, but it's considered to be a bare-metal hypervisor. And that's what I still don't understand why.
you are correct julesman Hyper V runs alot like vmware's free product. The virtualization in hyper v runs like a service in the windows kernel unlike ESXi which runs right on the hardware.Esx's kernel is the virtualization kernel and only 32 meg at that
You are beautiful

Wouldn't that mean that only MS products could run on Hyper V?
I dunno. If u can't circumvent the kernel, then you're stuck with the OS vendor's (MS) proprietary products, right?
Then Hyper V is just a mimic of MS IIS.
Not too much innovation...

Well they just watch what vmware does and do the same

so how does hyper-v virtualize the physical hardware?
