OK, I've finally done it. My previous hack only messed with the existing Mac IIci startup chime by slowing it down. But this time, I've totally changed it. I changed my Mac IIci's startup chime to the first few notes from the Super Mario Bros song.
It took some serious ROM hacking. What it comes down to is this: I had to desolder the four DIP ROMs from the IIci's motherboard, solder sockets in their place, find the code that plays the startup chime in the ROM, figure out how it works, and find room in the ROM to fit my custom sounds (the default startup chime is a single chord, and there are several chords played in my new startup chime). Then, I burned the ROM to some EEPROMs and put them in the DIP sockets I soldered to the motherboard. Anyway, it works!
The IIci reboots after the first Happy Mac icon because I don't have a PRAM battery installed. I guess it works out well because it shows off the sound again :-)
This is my second try of uploading this video -- I didn't realize the sound was really faint on my first try, so I deleted the original, amplified the sound, and put up a new one.
I love these old tanks. Excellent hack!
