She later made the transition to Mezzosoprano - to me it was always baffling how anyone could have thought she was a soprano. Listen to where her voice shows its comfort and full richness and how she had to struggle with the soprano tessitura all of her career sometimes failing miserably - watch her Suor Angelica finale on here and how she ommits the first high C and simply screams the second one. Fabulously committed artist probably just misguided in my humble opinion.

Such a variety of interesting comments on soprano Plowright! My most humble opinion (and that's what it really it)...is that she's a most fine soprano...again I say ,she's one who gets up there and stays in tune!!!! BRAVA!!!! To add to this delicious rendition is the fact that she is quite beautiful to see onstage....and I believe she's pouring out her sweet heart on this, and I love it, YES! I do love her rendition very, very much! BRAVA! Thank you!!!

She is horrible, horrible, horrible. Makes me cringe to hear her sing this. I remember years ago when this was telecast and was literally feeling sorry for her. Stand her up to Leontyne Price, Aprile Millo, Callas, or any real Verdi singer and she sounds like a 3rd rate singer on her best day. The lower and middle are not so bad, but the upper register is atrocious. I am not sure what the rest of you praising her are referring to. BAD SINGING.

What a Leonora ! She was such a real Verdisinger.

Leontyn Price is the best

Years ago, when we first saw this performance on tv, my then 8 year old said her voice was like a violin. Love it.

The audience's reaction says it all!

I agree... the finest recording I ever heard.
Carlo Maria Giulini choosen her to record Il trovatore with Domingo and Zancanaro.
She couldn't be so bad...
That recording is one of the finest I ever heard!

A great person to see and hear on stage, i would kill to have more like her around today in the big houses dispite the few small and insignificant technical problems. Her voice is unique.
