UnitingWorld - Integrated Community Development project in South India

The Adivasi live in the forests of Nilgiri Hills surrounding Gudalur in South India, and are descendants of the original inhabitants of India. They live in more than 400 distinct tribes, each with its own unique language and rich local culture.

But because many of them do not possess official identity papers, they struggle to access human rights that other Indians are entitled to under the law. This includes the right to education, to own property, to vote, access health care, and be a citizen.

Without these rights they are trapped in a cycle of poverty, and girls and women often bear the brunt. Girls are expected to forgo education and raise their siblings, and women often miss out on meaningful employment to care for their children.

We are working in partnership with the Church of South India to alleviate poverty in these marginalised communities by educating the youth, empowering women to become significant contributors to the community, and advocating for the Adivasis human rights.
