Furball Pet Friends - July 25, 2011 We happened to be in Westwood, California today and came across this protest and march staged by S.A.E.N. - "Stop Animal Exploitation Now" at UCLA.

UCLA research program rocked by federal law violations, and refusal to allow USDA inspectors to investigate. The university was just cited for violations of the animal welfare act including not having appropriate veterinarian care for
The report notes UCLA staff refused to let the federal inspector see portions of their labs.

Among other information, SAEN, an Ohio nonprofit which monitors the nation's research laboratories for taxpayer waste and cruelty to animals, said it will make available a statement by Dr. Lawrence Hansen, a Neuroscience professor at UC San Diego, suggesting UCLA methamphetamine research is useless and cruel.

"Millions of animals die in U.S. labs every year, many under barbaric conditions, in questionable research using scarce tax dollars," said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN.

The animals being experimented on and barring entrance to the USDA inspectors.

  • Animal experimentation if unscientific and horrific. I offered to drop a lawsuit (unreasonable injury demonstrating) back in 2006 if UCLA would debate the subject but they refused. UCLA has not DEBATED animal experimentation in over 20 years. The public univeristy that gets tax dollars to do nothing but torture defenseless animals.

  • More than 95%_ of animals being tested occurs in mice. Do you not find it a bit skeptical that non-scientists are telling you that something is not scientific? Question everything.

Convicted felons would not be an appropriate replacement for animals/mice. We cannot create the alzheimer, cancer, diabetes, hiv models in humans that we can in mice. Also, there would be a problem in data interpretation because there is a lot genetic variability between people, were as our mice are clones.

  • These animals are not from the wild, these are purpose bred animals for research._ There are governing bodies that regulate the ethical treatment of animals, and they_ are fierce at ensuring there is no unnecessary cruelty and that anesthesia is used when possible. Just like the police/fbi/cia/security fail to keep us safe, there are some people who fall through the cracks. The vast majority of scientists are good people, and are only doing what is necessary for humankind.

  • I`d like to support the protest! Animal experiments are absolutely needless and cruel. They waste lots of money which should be used for better things like helping poor people or protecting animals...

  • If we can't show respect to animals how can we show respect to each other, because after all we are just animals ourselves.

  • great cause.
