American teenager Kate Ziegler beat Laure Manaudou of France in a last-lap sprint to win the women's 800-meter freestyle final. The 18-year-old trailed Manaudou when the pair turned for home for the last lap but surged past in the last couple of strokes to win the gold in eight minutes 18.52 seconds. (WCSN, WCSN.com)

I thought Ziegler's name sounded familiar. I just realized that I sit right next to her in my sociology class at Chapman University! She told me she was a swimmer, but man, she was pretty modest about it :)

they have amazing lung capacity,i also think that Zielgler beat manadou due to this as Zielgler is the best female 1500m swimmer today so obviously wud make a big difference.manadou's freestyle became slightly untidy toward the end which wud suggest fatigue.lack of oxygen =poor technique=slower speed.Manadou is a natural sprinter i think,with amazing upper body strength that why she make an excellent 100m backstroker aswell.

laure manadou is without doubt one of the best freestylers.even though she lost this race,i believe she would have won if she didn't go out so hard.its a shame that she retired from competitive swimming

sensational, one of the best for sure. ziegler switching from 2 beat to 6 beat for the last 50m was the difference i think.

it means 6 kicks per stroke cycle. its called 6-beat kick. normally kate does a 2 beat

manaudou would be way faster if she kicked. especially in the 200 and 400. that is why ziegler beat her the last 50 and why adlington won the 800 because she held a 6 beat kick the whole way
