Although I haven't heard a version that compares to Cagney, this one is rather nice.

Yes, they are good, but 'smurfswacker' hit it on the head. It's the suaveness of Cagney in his heyday. Great film and the song carries it crashinglike a wave over the Shangai Bund. It fits the period. Before the War, Shanghai was a thriving city w/ Int'l intrigue. It's a 'catchy' tune!

That clarinet/tenor sax reading of the melody sounds eerily like the Raymond Scott Quintet of several years later. Then again, since the personnel of the Kardos band was never really fully known, it may be possible that Pete Pumiglio or Dave Harris were in the band at the time! I do believe that Scott got his musicians from studio bands.

Thanks, this is a great version of the song and previously unknown to me. FYI, the Jimmy Cagney / Busby Berkeley version is available on youtube again, at least as of this date (January 2008). Cheers.
