The woman (Butler's wife) really bugs me. Why can't she just concentrate on playing an instrument rather than mouthing the words into the camera and generally prancing around drunk. I love the song though.
the woman, regine cassagne, IS concentrate on her instrument (which isnt amplified by mics or amplis). She just FEEL and LIVE the music, that they are all part of. the arcade fire get this strenght, that they are fair, sincere, honest, musicians. their performance show their will, their vision of world, art and music(which is close from ecologism, with songs like "no cars go", "rebellion", or "haiti"). they want to be heard, they play with a kind of "last hope's energy". and they have the right.
Don't get me wrong, I do love the energy of the band and I think they make incredible music. It's just that she doesn't actually seem to be playing an instrument in this video. They also neglect the fact that some people do need to work in buildings downtown for the sake of society. And to neglect the idea of 'God' so readily is just plain arrogant.
haha, well, regine chassagne play drums, piano, violin, accordion, and in this song : tambourine. don't be too hard on her :p anyway, they don't "neglect the fact that some people do need to work in buildings downtown for the sake of society", i think they just mentionned the 9/11 trauma. it's a song about the right and the wrong. about the act of "believing in the right" in this world". about the faith. and what is the faith ? Faith doesnt mean Believe. Faith is the will to believe.
so that's what he means when he sings "i need to know if i'm losing my time" (i don't know if this is the right sentence, but the meaning is here). they don't neglect the idea of "God". They just criticize the "system", and they finally question the place of artists in society, the place of humanity and the place of "God", with a wonderfull irony and a really poetic song. and, once more, they have the right to question god and humanity :)
