The conference Inviting Dialogue: Renewing the Deep Purposes of Higher Education brought together eighty faculty, administration, and staff from New England colleges and universities and professional dialogue practitioners to discuss dialogues role in renewing the deep purposes of higher education: civic engagement, exchanges across differences, critical thinking and reflection, and creative problem-solving.
Co-sponsored by Clark University's Difficult Dialogues Initiative (in the Higgins School of Humanities) and the Public Conversations Project, the February 12 all-day event offered nine workshops, while building a network of people invested in dialogue on campus.
At the invitation-only gathering, attendees discussed their current efforts to build dialogue programs and explore the power of dialogue to challenge assumptions around discourse and power relationships within academia.
The conference was preceded by a community-wide gathering Dialogue: Why does it matter? during which conference attendees and the general public discussed the importance and value of dialogue within American society in 2010.
