You won't find this on ANY American DVD. So be grateful to YouTube. Here is the Japanese trailer to the Toei fantasy film, THE MAGIC SERPENT (1966). In the American dub the monsters roars are replaced by kaiju roars like Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, etc. In this Japanese trailer, you get to hear the monster's REAL roars.
So, here it is and..

Enjoy.

Actually, that Retromedia version which came out about 3 years back IS legal. What happened was the version issued by Fred Olan Ray's label (yea, THAT 'Fred Olan Ray'!!) is the American International direct-to-TV version we all grew up with (well, those of us who first saw it way back in '68/'69 and thru the mid-'70s). And, like the MAJIN FILMS and Showa GAMERA FILMS from the same AIP-TV package--the rights lasped and these versions fell into public domain.

So what Fred Olan Ray did was find some of the surviving TV Prints (which were in somewhat decent shape), remastered them (thru IMAGE Entertainment) and put them out for the first time in close to 30 years. These are the far superior Titra dubs (Peter Fernandez, Corrine Orr, Jack Grimes and Billie Lou Watt), not the terrible Sandy Frank re-dubs that folks know today. There's still MORE AIP-TV prints out there that have yet to even see video.

As a matter of fact, it was hard to see any of the mid-'60s AIP-TV package until ORION Video (AIP's successor) started to reissue some of it on VHS 20 years ago--until THAT company folded, leaving the titles in PD-limbo. (And all the AIP-TV titles weren't even released on VHS even then--I mainly recall "Monster From A Prehistoric Planet", "Yongary, Monster From The Deep", "Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster", "The X From Outer Space", and "Mission Stardust"--which was Italian.).

  • @MattBL i'm aware.

  • Jiraiya is of Japanese folklore and appears frequently in pop culture along with Tsunade and Orochimaru. Sarutobi and Sasuke's names were homages to characters of Japanese folklore as well. They were NOT born from this film nor Naruto. Oh and that also goes for Yagyu Jubei!

  • seriously, kishimoto made pretty intense references to the "tale of jiraiya the gallant"

  • Hey??...... Did nybdy chkout the place whr Jiraya Disarms this Ninja by tying him to a tree??....... Tht scene has been developd into the Scene ,whr Jiraya Disarms dis certain Ninja who Later becomes Pain...... in Naruto... U knw whn he is travellin thru the 'Country f Rain' He gets attaked n He fools d odr guy wid a clone N BANG!!!

  • This was actually on an illegally made DVD that came as a double-feature DVD with Gamera vs. Gayos (Also known as Return of the Giant Monsters). I found it in a Wal Mart bargain bin for 50 cents and almost shat myself!
