This is "the Face of Depression on a Continent" I happen to think when I hear that haunting refrain "Liebe war es nicht !"/That was no love/. I do not know anything about Fred Markush apart from the fact that he had composed in early 30s a few tangos of overwhelming strength of their refrains and that some of them were first published in Budapest.
Tango became a world success still in 1932; other recordings will be here presented.

This one belongs to Walter Weisst Archive.

  • He is singing with the Ilya Livshakoff Orchestra

  • Thank you.

It is announced in this video at 0:04.

  • This version and the Fred Bird version both have a haunted sound to them, as if the band and the singer both sensed that Everything was about to change. Probably you are not supposed to have an image of Hitler outside the door, but knowing what was going to happen, that sense is there in the music. Even the American version with Paul Whiteman has a feeling of something lost and a nervousness about the future.

  • You are making very deep analyses. I do share tham, thank you.

  • Jurek46pink, This is spectacular. It just oozes passion. Regards, J.

  • My great favorite - such a haunting, penetrating interpretation; thanks.

  • I thank you a lot for this and the many other videos of your samples, which I watched with interest and pleasure.

Could you tell me - maybe a link - to create videos for youtube? Kind regards, O.

  • @jurek46pink

I must have been doing something else! Sorry!

  • Deep analysis, indeed, Jurek, but I think fedtrooper is absolutely on target. This tango does somehow have a sense of foreboding.
