Brian Crosby, an upper elementary teacher for 29 years, guides the learning in a model technology classroom in Sparks, Nevada.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

  • WOW! LOVE THIS!

  • Very inspiring. After our talk a few years ago in Shanghai about echo chambers, it is so nice to see you walking the walk and actually getting on with the business of changing kids lives instead of just talking about it. Very well done.

  • Spot on, Brian! Congratulations to you and your students. Thank you so much for sharing how effective project-based, 21st century learning can be.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this window into your classroom, Brian, and your inspirational message. I'm sure those were learning experiences your students will keep with them forever.

  • Very true! Thanks for the reminder. This video is very inspiring, I just wish we had the funding and time. I am trying to get creative though. Being on block scheduling, our time is even less minutes than if we were all year.

  • trym2315 - Another thought - What if your school's sports teams use foul language or engage in negative behavior (that NEVER happens, right?) Don't they have your school's name associated with them? Your debate team or any other school group that works with other schools or public entities? If they use foul language or engage in negative behavior what is the ownership/punishment for that? Just asking.

  • trym2315 - The blog software we use (and others do this too) send student posts to you first before they end up on the net. Then you can quickly peruse each post and if it is OK, click on a link on the post and it posts to the web. On the other hand, students need to be taught web etiquette up front just like we teach students safe use of power tools in shop classes. trampolines and other gym equipment in PE and so on.

  • I teach high school and would love to use more technology. Of course, the time we have to teach objectives and the benchmark test dates does not afford much 'fun' time and I am spending my time this summer thinking of creative ways to incorporate techniques to get my students to be learners rather than to regurgitate info for a test. If students blog and use foul language or engage in negative behavior, what is the ownership/punishment for that? Isn't your school name attached to the blog?

  • If you want to see more of the work these students have done visit my blog and click on "LINKS TO MY STUDENTS' WORK" in the right sidebar at the top:
