Discover intensely hued jeweled masterpieces floating wondrously in utter darkness, embodying the ultimate combination of natural perfection and flawless artistic execution.
In selecting many of the objects for inclusion in the Gem Vault, the Museums curators used their extensive connections in the mineralogical world to acquire mineral cutting rough, freshly extracted from mines around the world. The Museum was thus able to obtain the very best natural stones and have them cut into faceted gems of exact specifications under the skilled hands of jewelry designers, including Ernesto Moreira.
Thousands of hours of meticulous design and superb craftsmanship went into creating this stunning jewelry collection, which includes rare sapphires, garnets, amethysts, Russian diamonds and aquamarines cradled in precious metal—many bearing Moreiras signature style. Experience a day in the life of this internationally acclaimed designer and observe the science behind these artistic masterpieces.
