Ok - I suppose with a vertical at home you wouldn't notice the overload as much. I was using a 706mk2g /m in the car for some time but find a larger dedicated hf rig like an FT-840 much better, for contesting we normally use FT-1000mp's as the prime movers. I was at one of the GB7HQ stations but not operating!!
Maybe catch you on air one day - i'm mainly a VHF operator (2m SSB) but you can often find me /m on 20m from the Suffolk coastline somewhere!!

Another good video, looking forward to seeing your video of the contest day itself and how it all comes together.
Good luck

IC-706 as a contest rig hummmmmmmmmmmm

Hi Keiron,
Yes, an odd choice. As you'll see from my other videos, however, I use the 706 because a lot of my operating is on IOTA and SOTA activations, and anything bigger would be too heavy to carry.
Sure, you're not going to be working SO2R on a 706 but I do believe that in contesting we should strive for the ideal of never touching the rig during the contest, except maybe the tuning knob when S&P. In this sense, the 706 does fine under computer control. 73.

What about RX overload? Whenever i've used an ic-706 (all mk's) they seem to suffer intermod and and rx overload when connected to a decent antenna!!

No, I haven't had any intermod problems with the MkIIG. RX overload has been a minor issue when we've used it on DXpeditions when we've had big pile-ups calling, but in contests from my terrible QTH and vertical antenna it isn't significant.

Man, I really want to get back into contesting, I don't think I've been on the air for at least 18 months now...
Background was a bit light though, your face was really dark!

Yeah, sorry about the lighting. It looked OK in the LCD screen at an angle.
