This is from the Saturday night competitions that were held on the outside stage. This performance was a bit after midnight and it had been pouring rain for about two hours. The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers (First Place Band) were joined by Rebekah Weiler on clawhammer banjo with "Sally Ann".

The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers regular members are Janice Birchfield (manager and washtub bass) and Bill Birchfield (fiddle, banjo, and more-all left hand). Their regular banjo player is Amy Michels who was not performing at Laurel Bloomery. There is no regular guitar player but various individuals help out there.

Their MySpace page is their official band site: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?...

The Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention has been held now for the 84th consecutive year in Johnson County and for the last 18 consecutive years it has been held at the Old Mill Music Park in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee. It was held on August 21 and 22, 2009 and it is usually the same weekend that NASCAR comes to Bristol Motor Speedway nearby.

  • Being left-handed myself, it's always a treat to see someone standing out in a right-handed world.

  • We saw them last year at r&roots Bristol ,this is the Real Deal. Love it Thanks .

  • Awesome. The key is right .. the fiddle & banjo combo are tuned tight .. the washtub string bass is working a treat .. and bingo - this is Sally Ann, beautifully played in the good old original way ... The Oldtimers, who were famous at Union Grove & Galax in the early 60s, would be damn proud of this ...

  • yep,awesome music/good people/i like this version of
