The Maliseet people of St. Mary's First Nation recreated an event from their past of great spiritual significance. Maliseet craftsman G. Wayne Brooks, along with family members, friends and neighbours, has built a replica of the 180-year-old Grandfather Akwiten canoe. The replica, called the Grandmother Akwiten, was launched in the St. John River at Fredericton, NB Saturday, September 28, 2009 along with two other birchbark canoes. An event such as this has not happened on the St. John River for more than 100 years. (taken from telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com )
