Sing it Mahalia!!!

When it comes to black popular music, everything starts with Mahalia Jackson. This song is amazing, simply amazing.
-
HE shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Amen.psalm;91:4.
-
This song is like her idol Bessie Smith: after listening to the song it sticks to you in your memory.
Mahalia successfully brings the African American slave into the 20th century of hope and possibilities. Mahalia being born in 1911/12? is definitely the midpoint when it comes to timelines in African American history in the music realm.

The best version I've heard her sing is on the "Live from Newport" album.
-
Probably Mahalia. I remember reading she would slow songs down (Baptist timing) and/or put them in a minor key to really give feeling to the song.

Does the record mention who's arrangement this is? Its rather a radical version from the standard that I've heard.

our choir is singing this song...I LOVE IT and i hope the person who gets the solo does it justice!! and maybe that would be me.....haha

It's kind of a serious and sad song. Her voice is always beautiful.
