"Foyt has a better idea!" Always a great line.
Also, love the old footage of the mile.

While so many comments fawn over A.J.'s versatility, you might want to check the records or Mr. Gurney, Andretti and Montoya. Especially before getting too keyed up about the Le Mans win, it would be instructive to note Foyt's co-driver and who-took-whom to school in how to drive an endurance race. Not for nothing does Shelby laud Gurney exhaustively over that win, his mentions of Foyt are few (left to his instincts, Foyt would have ruined the engine and/or brakes).

I haven't seen many A. J. Foyt's performances, but I respect him very much. He's as excellent as Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Rick Mears, Al Unser, Bobby Rahal and many Indy car drivers.

So compare lets say Martin Truex to AJ Foyt and then laugh your ass off. Its amazing who and what can pass as a race driver nowadays. AJ Foyt could drive any machine and also fix it, driver, mechanic, skilled chassis builder, designer, hero, he was everything. theres no comparission

Greatest race car driver of his era, which was a long era! At that time, the two disciplines of Indycar racing were paved oval tracks and dirt oval tracks. That day at Milwaukee, Foyt was driving his Championship Dirt car (not a sprint car). Champ dirt cars were lighter than the Indy roadsters and with only enough fuel for 100 miles, probably lighter than the rear-engined cars as well.

Fantastic. I read about that in Foyt's book 30 years ago, being able to see it on video is a treat. That sprint car out there with the small/low Indy cars... What a sight!
Thanks for posting!
