  • Greatest race car driver of his era, which was a long era! At that time, the two disciplines of Indycar racing were paved oval tracks and dirt oval tracks. That day at Milwaukee, Foyt was driving his Championship Dirt car (not a sprint car). Champ dirt cars were lighter than the Indy roadsters and with only enough fuel for 100 miles, probably lighter than the rear-engined cars as well.

  • Fantastic. I read about that in Foyt's book 30 years ago, being able to see it on video is a treat. That sprint car out there with the small/low Indy cars... What a sight!

    Thanks for posting!

  • he didin"t win

  • Those Offy dirt cars are fun as hell to watch.

  • Some had the skill! Others had the talent! But few have the heart! Old Americana! Without any doubt! Foyt is the greatest American race driver ever! He's won on all surfaces including winning in front & rear engine cars. he's won the Daytona 500 & even the 24 hour Le Mans. His credentials say it all.

  • Just one of many reasons why Foyt >> Andretti, Earnhardt, Schumacher, et. al.

  • Now that is what you call a real wheel man! Pretty tough act to perform in a dirt sprint car for that venue. For the record Gordon Johncock #76 won the race from 5th starting position in the 1965 Gerhardt /Offy Weinberger & Wilseck Special. A.J. Foyt #1 finished 2nd and Lloyd Ruby # 36 finished 3rd driving for Dan Gurney in a Halibrand 65 /Ford .

  • Amazing accomplishment by Foyt.... this video also represents something that I wish Indycar would adopt in the current series, and that is "run what you brung"

  • His tire changers on his pit crew (including his dad (RIP A.J. Foyt Sr.)) had burns on their hands after the race due to the buildup of intense heat.

  • I was there; he was/is the best ever!!
