Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma performs the "ganesh paran" (in the praise of lord ganesha) composition from the
Nathdwara tradition. This composition style is exclusive to the Nathdwara tradition.
He follows "ganesh paran" with a fast "Ta dhin nak" (three syllables of the pakhawaj) and another improvisation in the Nathdwara tradition. These improvisations are also exclusive to the Nathdwara tradition.
The pakhawaj, said to have been invented by the hindu god shiva, is an ancient indian two headed
barrel shaped percussion instrument. It is played with fresh kneaded dough applied to the left side of the
drum that gives it its characteristic deep resonant sound. Although its been eclipsed by the two drum tabla
in folk and khyal forms of Indian classical music, a pakhawaj is exclusively used for rhythmic accompaniment in the dhrupad tradition.
