12 April 2009 :: me taking some ukemi practice from Seino Sensei during the Aikido Kenkyukai International (AKI) Easter Camp in Canberra.

note: for those who are wondering why i'm not wearing my hakama, it's because my home dojo has recently affiliated with the AKI, and their etiquette is that the hakama is only worn by the yudansha. thus i continue wearing it for regular training in my home dojo, but remove it during gashukus.

  • that doesn´t look like it would work if the partner tries not to follow your moves

  • correct - this was an 'ukemi' exercise. i wasn't "attacking" him. in this specific scenario, 'ukemi' means a rolling exercise for me.

  • will try! g'luck with uni!

  • It's looking less and less likely as I draw near the date, I'm afraid - - I have to prioritise uni over gasshuku unfortunately. =(

post some vids tho if you can!

  • hey cool. a few of your Balmain guys came down to our gasshuku in Tasmania a couple of months back. did you join them?

i've already bought flight tickets to go over in Sept for Yasu-sensei's seminar. hope to see you there? ;)

  • hihi :-) I usually train at Balmain. I'm really hoping to get to the Yasuyuki Suzuki Sensei gasshuku in September - I'll find out if it fits in with uni soon. *fingers crossed*

    and you?

  • hi Vonster, haha i've never really watched the Muppets before, so i'll just have to take you word for it! but he was really really funny wasn't he? i couldn't help but get drawn in by his humour and cheery nature while training. =)

where do you normally train btw? will you be attending any other gasshukus in the next few months?

    cheers, osaya

  • Hi lordosaya :-) I was at this gasshuku -- isn't Seino sensei amazing. I decided his happy approach - combined with his use of verbal sound effects while training - made him come across like some sort of Japanese aikido version of the Swedish Chef from the muppets... lost count of how many times he came past, threw me a few times making noises like "oooooOOO! o hohohoho"

  • TwoDonkeys, that's the best description that I've come across. I'll let that sit with me for a while and hopefully infuse into my practice. Thank you for the insight and wonderful comments.

  • I was thinking the same thing. He looks like a happy parent, pushing a kid on a swing. What fun.

heartywhistler - I started Aikido classes on May 5th, '09 too. Enjoying the journey so far.

Osaya - Thank you for your videos. Very inspiring.
