We Call Him "Heavy". I once got his autograph. James Clay is one of the reasons that many people swang like they do. I use to watch him play through the window of a club in Deep Ellum and he did somethings on sax that Ive never seen anyone do. My favorites are Easy Living and Cookin At The Continental. The recordings are great but he was also amazing live.
I had the honor of knowing James as a good acquaintance, through my wife who often shared the stage with him in the Dallas area (she being a locally very respected jazz vocalist). Someone on here commented he being "banished" to Texas. James lived in Dallas, at home with his wife, and put his son through college. James was very well known in Japan and Europe, and gigged with many well known fellow artists. He was a friend, someone whose talent I greatly admired, and all who knew him, miss him.
heard this wonderful tune last night on 91.5FM KUNV here in Las Vegas courtesy of Bob Parlocha......kinda reminds me of the background music for American Cancer's PSA in the mid 60's...."Like Father, Like Son? Think About It."

Sounds like Vic Feldman on vibes, Sam Jones bass, Louis Hayes drums. Actually it sounded like Victor on the piano as well.
Great stuff. James Clay must be one of the most underrated musicians in jazz history.
