athletes are tested all the time doing a vertical jump.

It was mentioned in the video that you could measure this way, but the point of this test is to see what is occurring with the legs, as this is where you can make the strongest improvement...need to dial it in for the training.

mann im sick of all these videos saying you need this to jump higher,look all you have to do to jump higher is to practice it when ever you play ball,focuse on how you jump and ow high you wanna go,keep playing basketball and try to dunk

For a recreational athlete just playing different sports is a nice way to x-train. But the advanced athlete needs certain training & assessment information to ID where they are strong/weak, and monitor change to make sure they are getting the desired results.

Jump performance collerates to athletic/sport performance, so this is an important monitoring point during your training -- benchmark & track change.
You also need to see if your training is impacting the strength (force) or speed (velocity) of your jump -- a very important point.
There are numerous other training applications relevant to sport performance, a bit more advanced & for the advanced level -- kind of like fine tuning an engine. Hope this helps.
