The Sacred Image of the Icon: A World of Belief
May 8, 2008 - September 1, 2008
The Sacred Image of the Icon: A World of Belief examines the socio-cultural differences of various geographic regions from the early Christian Diaspora to present day, focusing on significant moments in history, which led to certain changes in iconographic styles and representations.
Iconographers, who for the most part remained anonymous, either adapted to foreign influences or resisted any changes and sought a new form of continuity of their spiritual expression.
Comprised primarily of icons from around the world dating from the 16th century to present day, this exhibition aims to explore the tradition of icon painting and the continuity of Orthodox iconography as a religious art form.
The creation of this exhibition stems from the curators' belief that all icons regardless of their aesthetic qualities, lead beyond themselves and make the divine present in the Church. Like the liturgy (the religious service performed in the Church), they serve as both remembrance and representation of the sacred.
When assembled into meaningful sequence, icons create a visual hierarchy that defines the viewer's place in the continuum from earth to heaven.
