  • awesome

  • look up this video Awesome F-4 Phantom Maneuver

he would do this but at high altude turning the plane down

  • mig would of won the mig did not try a mig can turn way way way better than a f4 his angil of his turn was to low thus not makeing a very tight turn he was not trying any ways the only way the f4 would win is if he turned and burned going faster than the mig then then gain altude faster than a mig 17 he could hit a right rudder flip his plane untell a uncontoled reverse then regaining controll if the mig would stall like it should the f4 would have a advantage and be on the migs tail.

  • @jwpatt1st his daughter Christina just recently published his biography titled "fighter pilot" its really good..

  • @catyclasian Cheers for Robin Olds. From knocking dowm Me109's over 'Germany in 44 and 45 to out dueling the Mig 17 over Nam. P-38 to F4. What a long great service to the nation.

  • You are right though, in the lower, more dense air, the Mig could out turn the F-4. However, Phantom pilots in vietnam could outrun, and out climb the mig -17, so they tended to go at them fast and hard from a higher altitude full power, thus building up their a/s.. get out of the area, then come at them again.

  • low level dogfights were rare in vietnam, but robin olds did kill a mig-17 low level with an aim-9 missle lock while following the mig into a valley. When the ridge came up, the mig had to climb, thats when it was shot down cause the aim 9 needed sky to obtain a missle lock, it had a tough time with the jungle floor as a background due to the heat signatures, it couldnt seperate the mig and obtain a lock. The phantom could out power and out climb the mig, so they could bug out if need be.

  • That's an older F-4D: no slatted wings, no gun. It would have a hard time tangling with the nimble MiG-17 in this particular set up.

  • You think maybe we oughta tell the pilot of that F-4 that he's on fire? LOL. I dunno, even with a gun this is a fight the the F-4 would be at a disadvantage. Low-altitude turning gunfights are not the Phantoms "forte", especially next to a little bugger like a MiG-17. If the MiG had a good pilot, he could have shot the F-4 up on the first pass, when the missile "missed". Although that sure was appropriate; the Sparrow had a 1 outta 4 success rate in Nam. So much for the new "miracle weapon"!
