Artist: The Pop Group
Album: Y
Release Date: 1979
Label: WP

Abrasive, but interesting, the Pop Group's debut is perhaps the most succinct summation of their angry and defiant approach to rock & roll. Although at times resembling the discordant funk of fellow post-punk radicals Gang of Four, the Pop Group leave rhythm behind almost as quickly as they find it, and the result is a clattering din of sound resembling an aural collage. The longish, guitar-driven track "We Are Time" is the strongest cut, establishing a solid groove that won't let go.

  • The vocalist has a pleasant voice. Does he do a lullaby version?

  • Dub crazed post-punk fire.

  • I adore TPG & I adore this song along with "she is beyond good & evil" & "Snowgirl". This particular song is my favorite, i just love to crank this one all the way up & lose myself in the glorious splendor that is TPG.

  • @LaxATivvz True, but they had some subsequent releases on the Y- Rough Trade label.

  • The album is called "Y"

  • Didn't think I'd find any Pop Group here but bang! There it be.

  • @modifiedcontent @LaxATiwz You're both right. This is the version from the'Y' album (released 1979 on Jake Riviera's Radar Records in the UK), while another version of the song did indeed appear on a compilation called 'We Are Time', released by the 'Y Records' imprint of Rough Trade in 1980.

  • @LaxATivvz, Pop Group and Shriekback in the UK were on an independent label called 'Y Records' that had a big Y on the vinyl label. Warner Brothers was their American distributor.
