I don't get it. Why is a fear of everything is called a phobia, but fear of germs is called OCD?

It's not a fear of germs, it's an obsession to be clean, tidy and germ-free. it's not that she's scared of germs, it's that she can't help but obsess over being free of them.

@powerup151 thats a comman mistake made about OCD, that it's all about germs. The difference is the chemical make up in an OCD sufferers brains, the idea of obsessing over things that make no sense, which compose of rituals and compulsions. It's not just a fear.

I don't have the washing hands OCD, but yeah as said before it's the thoughts that suck. It's like you can't control them. They make no sense, but they won't leave you.

@natarias2007 To be like this is one of many types of OCD. An obsession can come in any way, as can the compulsion.

oh gosh...that cleaning hands thing is what i hate the most! it's destroying my skin.

just face it: two to five pounds of your body is live bacteria. doesn't matter how much you wash your hands. :)

@powerup151 You're entirely wrong. The fear of germs is called mysophobia, as the other person said. OCD is a disorder where (a) people have intrusive thoughts, like I'm going to get contaminated, I didn't lock the door, I'm going to say something terrible to someone I love and (b) feels like he/she has to do something to avoid that, like washing hands, checking the lock, or walking a certain way through the house.

i do the exact same thing...exept checking the locks..ocd is driving me crazy!!
