The Union High School Marching Bears took to the competition field for the first time in their school's history on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Chilhowie Band Festival in Chilhowie, Virginia.
The Band, under the direction of Kimberly D. Sturgill, was formed in 2011 with the consolidation of the former Powell Valley and Appalachia High Schools in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and Appalachia, Virginia respectively. This year, the band presented their 2011 show entitled "Killer Queen," including selections from the band Queen. Their show included "Fat Bottomed Girls," "Bicycle Race," and "We Are The Champions."
