Shoji Nishio (西尾 昭二 , December 5, 1927 -- March 15, 2005) was a Japanese Aikido teacher holding the rank of 8th dan shihan from the Aikikai.

Nishio was born in Aomori Prefecture of Japan in 1927. He joined Aikikai Hombu Dojo in 1951 and began to teach around 1955. Before aikido he studied judo (4th Dan Kodokan Judo), karate (4th Dan Shindō jinen-ryū), iaido (7th Dan Nihon Zendoku Iaido) and jōdō and also Shintō Musō-ryū jōjutsu and Hōzōin-ryū sōjutsu. Skills gained from them he managed to smoothly include into his own specific aikido style where all techniques can be performed with the wooden sword bokken in hand as well as without weapons, and his weapon systems has few similarities to the more common system that derives from Morihiro Saito. He held the title of an Aikikai shihan and created a new school of Iaido with forms from aikido, called Aiki Toho Iaido or Nishio-ryu Iai. In 2003 Nishio received the Budo Kyoryusho award from Japanese Budo Federation for his lifetime contribution to development and worldwide propagation of aikido. He died in March 2005 aged 77.

  • Such control of himself.. Truly amazing.

Was he one of O-Sensei's direct students?

    Thanks for postingby the way..

  • @gowdaflow :When Nishio joined the Aikikai, the founder Ueshiba O-Sensei was spending most of his time in Iwama in Ibaragi Prefecture. It was a full year and a half before Nishio saw the imposing figure of the founder in action for the first time. What particularly impressed Nishio about Ueshiba’s technique was his lightning fast handling of the sword.

  • Wow, some of these movements I've never seen before... Particularly the one starting at 0:49. Interesting... And he has such control with weapons. To swing so fast and so accurately and to stop it instantly.... amazing. This guy is a true master.

  • @RedCrescentDemon: Nishio took up the study of iaido (Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu) with 10th dan Shigenori Sano in 1955, and then jodo (Shindo Muso-ryu) with the famous Takaji Shimizu (1896-1978). Each of these arts contributed to his knowledge of the use of weapons and, in turn, complemented his aikido training. Not everyone was pleased with Nishio’s forays into other arts as his aikido began to take on a unique flavor.

  • @RicardoOliverDiu That is because zero force exertion is a key in Japanese Aikido. Perfect center and mastery of this art you can manipulate any size Uke.

  • I studied under Sato Sensei who was for a short period of time a disciple of O Sensei. The difference between Americanized butchered Aikido and Japanese true Aikido is astounding. I wish I was back in Iwakuni and continuing my lessons after watching these videos.

  • Is this the karate kid tune??

  • his better than segal. Got more contrly, does it gracefull without hurting his opponent(student) much. IT tells alot who you are

  • Man... I´m a Taekwondo practitioner... I don´t know much about aikido... But watching this old sensei lifting up a relatively young man... Is just insane...

    REALLY COOL

  • I have had my black belt in akido for several years and I still practice. This man is excellent. Very poised. Very graceful. He is an inspiration to all of us in the art and he brings back the beauty to the art that originally called me to it...

  • @AikikaiAikido I would've loved to meet O-Sensei in real life. I've seen a few of his videos. He seems like a really cool guy with a good sense of humor.

  • @AikikaiAikido Hey, if he's a guy that doesn't limit himself to only aikido or one particular art, and then blends all his knowledge to make something unique and unparalleled, that's cool in my book.
