the plasma membranes of amoeba are very flexible, so the amoeba can for pseudopodiae (i know latin) to swallow their food in a food vaucole. Another cool thing to watch is an amoeba using its contractile vaucole (i want to see something like that.)

The clip of the "Ugly Amoeba" shows a large contractile vacuole that collapses towards the end of the sequence. Some of the others also show clear contractile vacuoles.

You could try placing your water samples in the fridge for awhile in order to cool the temperature of the water which will in turn slow down the amoebas metabolism thus causing them to be less active and move more slowly.
