Sonata in Bb for viola and piano, Op. 36 (1863)
Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881)
II. Barcarolla: Andante con moto

Beth McDonald, tuba
Debbie Emery, piano

----------------------

The opening Sonata is written by Vieuxtemps, a composer and prominent violinist in the mid-nineteenth century. It's very much a mid-Romantic era piece, spinning long melodies in traditional harmonies but with chromatic twists, all within basically classical forms. The sound of the viola translates quite easily to tuba (down an octave), but not all of the musical gestures translate, hence this is not a literal translation of the piece, but includes sections rewritten by myself and Debbie Emery. This is by far the most ambitious piece on the program in terms of duration and physical endurance.

----------------------

Recorded live at New England Conservatory's Pierce Hall, Sunday, 7 Nov. 2010.
