Yesterday there was a major fire near Watsonville that closed down Highway One for several hours. Today I was going out to take photos of the burned area when I saw a NEW fire in the hills above Watsonville. At first I thought this new fire was arson also because not only was there ONE new fire, but about 4 miles away... as the crow flies... another one started.
Then I remembered that I had seen two amazing lightning bolts strike the area shortly before the fires started. So I am guessing that these fires will be chalked up to lightning.
What it funny about the lightning is this... We've been experiencing a heat spell like none I've ever seen in all the years I've lived here. The heat was so bad that everyone was afraid the fire from yesterday was going to start up again.
And then the rains came!!! By noon today our area was covered with thick clouds. Here is the link to the slide show I put up on RMN showing the clouds and the rain drops.

While I was posting the above post I heard fire engines and went out chasing them. The fire engines I followed went to the Corralitos creek across from the Freedom Post Office. There was nothing there.
As I was coming home, I saw a fire over Hecker Pass. When I stopped the car to get a better shot of it, I saw the OTHER fire in the same place where the original Corralitos fire blazed about six weeks ago. These two new fires make at lest 5 fires this season. That's a lot for this area.

Funny I found this video, I was the guy in the Blue Ford Taurus that you pulled up behind, that fire was actually over the hill on the outskirts of Gilroy. Nevertheless this was a crazy day filled with lightning strikes and new fires. It was a show thats for sure.
