Batman Vengeance is a video game that was released over a period of time on all major platforms of the sixth generation of console games. It was developed and published by Ubisoft in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. It is based on DC Comics' character Batman and the television series The New Batman Adventures.
Designs and voice cast
Vengeance took environmental and character designs from The New Batman Adventures, and starred most of the main voice cast from the series and it's predecessor Batman: The Animated Series. The cast includes Kevin Conroy returning as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, Tara Strong as Batgirl, Diane Pershing as Poison Ivy, Michael Ansara as Mr. Freeze, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. as Alfred Pennyworth, Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn, Lloyd Bochner as Mayor Hamilton Hill and Robert Hastings as Commissioner James Gordon.
Plot
In Batman Vengeance, crime escalates in Gotham City as Batman finds himself the target of a conspiracy. After the Joker plummets to his apparent death in an attempt to kill Batman, Gotham's criminals quickly escalate their schemes to gain power. Batman discovers subtle links in these seemingly unrelated crimes, but is forced undercover after being framed for an attack on Commissioner Gordon. Hunted by the police, the Batman must discover who is behind these mysteries before Gotham City is destroyed. In the end Batman discovers that it was the Joker who was causing all the destruction after all. He is the final boss of the game. After Batman defeats the Joker while falling down the streets of Gotham, he saves the city, and finally defeats his arch enemy, the Joker. Gotham City is now safe, and yours to protect.
Presented in a more stylized golden age comic book appearance that communicates attitude and personality through spartan artwork, Batman engages in a variety of different gameplay modes (e.g. traditional third-person platforming and vehicle-based gameplay) in his pursuit to rid Gotham City of its most notorious criminals.
Reception
Batman Vengeance received near universal praise by critics alike, praising it for its complex story and graphics, which looked almost exactly like the animated series. Much praise also went towards the music and the voice acting, especially Mark Hamill who played the Joker, saying that his voice work stood out in the game than most of any other character. The gameplay was also well received, but there was much criticism for the first person view, and there were also complaints about the player's abilities being limited. While the console versions of the game were praised, the PC version drew a lot of negative reviews due to the odd controls, tinted graphics and camera. Negative feedback came from the fact that all of the problems found in the console versions were worse and more apparent in the PC version of the game.
