The Magic Flute - The charms of Mozart's music

TAMINO: From the way that I play, I would say that it's clear
I'd have been a keen musician.
I can trill with skill by just blowing here...
all by ear, without a lesson or tuition.
This bravura tune tests how skilled I am,
and proves that music makes hearts soften.
If the lion lies down with the lamb, I should play this tune more often.
But where's Pamina?
If she's not too far away she might hear these notes I play. Pamina...Pamina...Listen! Here am I.
There's no reply. Why, why, why does she not answer me? (Papageno's pipes)
Ah, I've heard that phrase before.
That phrase is Papageno' s tune...
he plays it morning, night and noon.
Perhaps she's with him...they must have heard my tune. Pamina..if you are there, I'll find you soon (exit)
enter PAMINA AND PAPAGENO: Seems the tootle came from here. Prince Tamino must be near.
We must find him in a tick, then you and me and he can scarper double quick.
We must find him straight away... then we'll be clear of here before the break of day.
PAMINO:Oh, Tamino..
PAPAGENO: Keep your voice down..here's the safer way to call him.(plays pipes and hears response).
BOTH: That's his flute, which proves he's heard us. Now he'll know he can't be far
He'll have heard just where we are.
In a flurry, we must scurry. They will capture us again if we don't hurry.
They are on our heels behind us, so let us quickly go, let us quickly go, no more to-ing no more fro-ing, let's get going, let's get going or they will find us...
MONOSTATOS: You're not going, You're not going, You're not going!
Ha - you thought you'd get away!
I had warned you not to leave me or defy me or deceive me, but you chose not to believe me.
For this you'll pay dearly!
I will punish you severely!
I may roast you on a spit!
PAPAGENO & PAMINA: Well, that's changed our plans a bit .
MONISTATOS (to Henchmen) Throw them into separate cells.
PAPAGENO: Wait a tick...just the trick,
I was told to ring these bells.
They will conjure magic spells, which your mother said would save us, should they catch us and enslave us. (he plays bells, and the evil Celts become passive and are compelled to dance).
MONOSTATOS AND HENCHMEN: Why this music sedates me is frankly bizarre
Lara la la la lara la la la Lara la!
Captivates me, elates me, this sound from afar
Lara la la la lara la la la Lara la!
How it intoxicates me. Quick march to the bar. Lara la la la lara la la la Lara la!
