If you have to have covers, then this is probably the best I've heard - but Judee Sill has the emotional connection which no-one else can possibly have experienced.
"laura-michelle-kelly" "you" MUST REMEMBER WHO "I" AM
"I" AM THAT AMAZING-'LOOKING'-'MAN' THAT SAT NEXT TO "you" ON THAT "Delta- First- Class" FLIGHT ON THE WAY TO "London" THAT HONESTLY TOLD "you" "'I' AM TRYING TO GET TO 'STONEHENGE'" SO "I" BE COMPLETELY-"physically"-HEALED AND "you" HELD THE HAND "I" HAVE AS "you" PRAYED-&-CRIED!!! (like a fool "I'' lied to "you" in pride saying "'I'-am-OK" (as "I" was truly in tremendous pain) AND "you" SAID "'I' will take 'you'" - PLEASE CONTACT ME
Me again? Yes, DaveBTHunt. I agree with everything you said on the two posts for this song where our comments met. Judee Sill is definitive. The version that grabs me hard is the live version at the piano. Being able to see Judee perform this was special. Neither you or I can prevent anyone from continuing to cover the song. Hopefully, they will be respectful. Judee's estate stands to benefit from covers and keeping Judee's music alive is paramount. Especially this one.
@lastrada52 you again? lol: coincidence. I'm starting believe people can best pay their tribute by just not covering this song! This is an honest and a pretty good take on it - especially in the choric parts - but, to me, that's seems to be only because it's like she's cloned the song and made excessive effort to match Judee's every phrase, nuance and tone, and not stray too far at all - she even follows where Judee pushes her voice through her nose on some lines!
Today's young female vocalists have been covering some great obscure wonderful tracks. The people who are familiar with Judee Sill and her marvelous song know that trying to compete with Sill's incredible vocals and original version is not easy. Rachael Yamagata's version is also good and I am pleasantly surprised to find Ms Kelly also in great form and covering this song with such sincerity. Today's artists may not write songs as great as this -- but it's nice to know their ears are open.
