In this clip I play three of my favorite banjo songs: "Charlotte Breakdown," "When You and I Were Young Maggie" and "Whoa! Bucking Mule." Not bad for a little over a year of playing. I AM LOOKING FOR BLUEGRASS BAND MEMBERS IN SEATTLE!

  • not bad but after a year you should be alot smoother than that, learn to play in something else than a constant forward roll is my advice. banjo is so much more than what most people reduce it to. Also let me add that speed is what a banjo is built for, speed is the EASY part, sure it may impress ppl that have little to no real musical insight but to anyone that knows their shit can tell, LOL and a banjo is NOT a fucking drum, i LOL everytime i see ppl do that dumb shit.

  • Okay, let's see your video. Show me the RIGHT way to do it.

Also check the date, this was over two years ago.

  • Slow down....You are speeding most of the time and getting a bit sloppy in your execution. The slower tempo numbers sound much better.

  • No, thanks.

You stick to the slow ones.

When I play, I have fun.

  • I have to say, at first I was going to say to slow down but FORGET IT!! That sounded GREAT!! I have been playing the left handed banjo for about a year myself. I want to ask you, where did you learn to play like that? Did you have a teacher (online or in person) or did you teach yourself? I would like to know if you don't mind me asking.

  • Thank you for not telling me to slow down, I hate it when people do that. I took lessons for a little more than a year, in person, from one of the best banjo guys around here. I also practice pretty much every day for a couple hours. It takes alot of commitment.

  • @dicsballer9 Haha, I was wondering the same thing. In reply to him, I "LOL" everytime somebody has something smart like that to say with no videos...or any evidence that they could do any better, at all.......

  • The parts where Don used the "brush" technique, you are supposed to strum while holding the palm of your hand lightly over the bridge, if you want to get that Reno sound for When You And I Were Young,Maggie.

  • Stop bashing the kid, He is awesome! I played just like that after 1 year, and I only have 6 months of 1/2 hour lessons once a week

  • And the last thing I have to say, is your tempo is a little bouncing. I find you speeding up and slowing down a back and forth a lot. Might just be you more familiar with some parts of the songs with other and breeze thru the easy parts but when you hit the less familiar parts, you slow down a bit to manage them.

Slowing down a tad would negate this and I think thats really the issue anyone has with the song.

All and all, very good after a year, but as with anything, always could use more. =)

  • Also, additional words of advice, those who think they know it all, never do, and find out they learn the most when they do.

Those they think they are the best, never push themselves as hard as those who don't, so natural talent and the best tutor won't get you as far as them.

Be comfortable with yourself, your young, so you take everything to heart. Take things at face value, and if someone mentions something, review your work, and you just might find some merit in it.

  • Sounds good but very choppy. Your finger is def clipping alot on one of the notes damping it. Playing fast doesn't make you sound good, playing right does, so have fun and play at a speed at which you perfect, the first one that is, the rest sound good..

  • @SkankHermit Damn dude, who made you fucking Banjo Bill?

  • good just man...dont let Skankhermit tell you other wise...he obviously hasnt seen the Whoa Mule by Raymond Fairchild because he hits the head of the banjo...and thats really good playing i might add also. keep up the work...music is how you like to play not how some skankhermit tells you how to

  • you suck!

  • youre a cocky motherfucker dude
