November 9, 2009 - There's been quite a lot of controversy surrounding EA Sports' first entry into the mixed martial arts (MMA) gaming space. Dana White, the head of UFC, has been very outspoken about EA's first MMA offering, reportedly saying that any fighter who appears in the game will be banned from UFC for life and speaking out against EA Sports for doubting the legitimacy of MMA when White pitched the company on a UFC game years ago. Having recently seen EA Sports MMA in action at a press event in Chicago, rest assured that the sports gaming conglomerate is putting its full weight behind its first venture into the ring.
My biggest problem with THQ's UFC effort last year was that the fighting was too mechanical. At times it felt like you were playing Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots whether on the ground or standing. EA Sports has gone to great lengths to ensure that their game has a more organic feel to its combat. Fighters can throw punches simultaneously without waiting for their opponent's animation to finish. We saw player models for Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers grappling on the ground. Fedor threw punches to Brett's head as Rogers struck the Russian's side.
