It's my understanding that they test them now, but it can't be much of a test if we keep hearing about these sad situations after the fact.
It'll take time, but some interest group will get laws instated, in California at lest, that actually define what the testing has to be, and then they'll move production to the middle of nowhere, like they did with Kid Nation to get around the child labor laws.
You seem too smart to be on one of these shows, so I don't have to worry about you :).

All they care about is making money without caring about the people on the show = mean.
People on the show aren't the smartest that they would be on a show and honestly believe they could be her friend, but that only makes it worse. And why would they test them if it's all about money?
Besides it was the point that they wouldn't know about it all being set up, so it would be dumb to test them otherwise they might find out. They only care about money.

It's not mean it's bad business.
They have to start seriously testing the contestants on these shows to ensure that they are mentally up to the task. Anything less is criminal negligence and mental cruelty.

@lesterclaypool1 Never said it wasn't stupid if you seriously beliefe you can be somebody's best fried after winning a show, but that doesn't make it less mean. She really thought they were going to be friends and Paris just dumped her without caring.
Besides there are A LOT of shows like this and A LOT of people fall for them.

If she thinks Paris used her she must not have read the fine print of the contract that she signed to be a contestant on a game show or is suffering some kind of mental problems that keep her from understanding that, problems that should have been caught by the mental health consultants when she was qualifying to be a contestant.
It's reality television, not real life.

Yeah, she was still 'friends' with her. Until she found out that it was all a plan. Paris just wanted a show. Britney found out that Paris already planned a second season in the middle of the 1st. So much drama. Brtiney left her. BUT NOW SHE IS FAMOUS BECAUSE OF HER BAND. She is in a band, she sings. That's why she is famous now. And Paris sufficated her. Paris would complain if she went to chill with her friends or her band. So, she couldn't take the lies and the drama anymore, and left.
