Wadlopen / a walk in the mud 8 july 2007

Slide show with original music: Walk on The wad, the Dutch/ Frysian mudplains or coastal wetlands in the north of the country where fresh water meets salty water and birds rest during their annual migration. The flora is quite diverse. 85 % of the Waddenzee is a protected area since 1993. Threats are eutrophication (fertilizers),
dirty water of the rivers flowing into the North Sea and sea level rise, although our guides where confident that the sea would raise the ground level with sand.
The wadden sea is an estuary of the North Sea, and several organisations like Dijkstra organize hikes (wadlooptochten).
