im about halfway through the subtle knife... and i wanted to check out the film for northern lights ( its what its called over here) but dident they just sum up most of the plot in that trailer? :S
The tragedy of the Authority and his attempts to be God can be seen as a lesson to readers that only failure and destruction will befall anyone who tries to be God.
my dad is HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY Catholic. And the Majesterium (spelling" don't remember) is the "main bad guy" of the Dark Materials Trilogy. and my dad LOVED all of them. he's read them a couple times actually
Honestly, the book was phenomenal. Read it. But the movie is quite disappointing.
The religion controversy centers around the Magesterium - the Roman Catholic Church - and its domination. You could definitely say Pullman writes it as a serious bible basher, but, it's a very intriguing plot and makes for a deep topic.
I recently read it for my class, and having read some of the backstory, it seems more like a criticism of Calvinism than Catholicism. According to the backstory in the novel, the Church had existed for a while, but it was only after the last Pope, John Calvin, took over and moved the Papacy to Geneva (birthplace of Calvinism) and put a shitload of Calvinist elements in the Church that the Church became evil.
So basically the Catholic Church wasn't originally evil; Calvinism turned it evil.

Why won't they release the 'uncut' version??!!!
But if you get to the third, the Amber Spyglass, then, you might get upset...
