@zigmaister I guess he either programs his own or plays some loop, as you see he is in a home studio so getting a drum loop to play isnt really an issue... you could download FLstudio for free and get a loop playing in no time (also set your own tempo)

QUESTION: Johnny, why did you pick the "A minor" scale? Can I just pick any random spot on the fretboard and use the same fingering/placement and have it result in a minor scale? (albeit a different key)?

O man, practicing with a metronome or a drumbeat is EVERYTHING! First and foremost a bass player has to keep real solid time. everyone is counting on you for that. If you don't practice things "in time" to a click or a beat, you're wasting your efforts. think of the metronome as your bandmate that never makes a mistake. After a while, your sense of time will become so strong, that you'll be able to tell when other players start to drag or speed up.
