there are a lot of things which are great in this recordings , but its right there is a lack of technique as he comes out of the old school and would not have recorded a lot of chopin or liszt or rachmaninoff for example. The modern ones like Horowitz Gilels Richter were better in sound and technique.
But pianists like schnabel and edwin Fischer are of quality and represent a certain "german" or whatever called school.... I would put Brendel Gulda Demus also in this school

Excellent playing. Shows how Schnabel helped continue the great music that is the backbone of our classical piano literature. The music world was lucky to have such an artist who performed the greatest of music only without playing "down" to the audience.
One of the greatest of pianists.

may be !

well...this brahms rendition is,what a pity, mostly uninspired and therefore insignificant.
mr.schnabel obviously didnt certainly have any sense or feeling of the brahms-espressivo,manifesting in a pretty hectical and sometimes hysterical approach.one can really have the impression that he might not being up to this mouvement technically and emotionally.
but, sinfoniette, nonetheless thank you for posting this as a part of the legendary pianist´s collection.

Many, many thanks for restoring this in such great sound to You Tube! I believe the conductor in the photograph is Sir Malcolm Sargent, not George Szell.

Yes he is - in fact I did not mean to put him to show Szell; its just a nice picture of Schnabel composing his first symphony with Sargent's help. Thanks for clarification!
