Nighttime tests.

This isn't a torture test! This is a Guantanamo Waterboarding test!

Source format: 1920 x 1080 60i, 30p and 24p (no 3:2 reverse pull-down applied)
Project deinterlacing setting: Interpolated Fields
Rendering format: 1920 x 1080 29.97 Hz Progressive
Video codec: XviD Quantizer 4.00 HDTV profile

The Canon received a lot of complaints about its low light deficiencies in "P" mode. Not only is there a lot of noise in the image, the shutter speed drops below 1/30, causing the video to look like a slide show.

But if you take the time to experiment with the camcorder's settings, you WILL find at least one setting that will work in your darkened environment. It's all a matter of experimentation.

Try alternating between the 1/30 or 1/24 shutter speed in the Cinema mode while recording in 30p or 24p. That combination appears to deliver the most consistent results in low light, with the Cinema Mode's weak contrast and brightness levels easily adjustable in most non-linear editing (NLE) software packages.

The camcorder performed exceptionally well when photographing the fountain's flames, which is where the automatic controls of most camcorders become totally confused. On top of successfully maintaining the proper color balance, the camcorder's auto-focus managed to maintain proper focus on the dancing flames and shimmering water most of the time. Even when the camcorder did lose focus, it didn't lose it for very long.

  • hi i cant find where to change to 60i,i saw only 50i standard.

    Please help

    thnx

  • @greenmahidol You have a PAL camcorder, not an NTSC camcorder. 50i is the best you can get.

It's pretty silly. These camcorders can support all worldwide standard frame rates. There's no need to lock these camcorder to support only a single region's broadcast standards.

  • nevermind.....this ain't confusing anymore!

  • What happened that it was suddenly no longer confusing?

  • is it my laptop fault that the video is little bit choppy, for example @ 04:09 - 4:19 when the cars go by? This segment was shot @ "1/24 shutter and auto exposure at 24p" this is your manual setting or it's some kind of mode? thanks for reply.

Btw. every new camera needs videos like this one! Great video

  • No, it's not your laptop especially if the 60i and 30p sequences look okay. Converting 24p material to 30p can introduce some frame chopping in the final video if the frame rate conversion isn't done right. That along with deinterlacing are the areas where Sony Vegas (all versions) still has a lot of problems, even with the recent release of version 10.
