From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_San...

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco, CA and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8; however, other values have been proposed, from 7.7 to as high as 8.25. The main shock epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles (3 km) from the city, near Mussel Rock. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total of 296 miles (477 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. The earthquake and resulting fire is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire, estimated to be above 3,000, is the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history. The economic impact has been compared with the more recent Hurricane Katrina.

Holy moly, I can't imagine how bizarre it would be going back to the 1900's!

Yeah, I understand that. I think my comment was referring more to a "standard technique." There were also records of steam powered cars many years before the actual automobile was "invented".

Not true. Molier (trip to the moon 1903 fame) had colour film in 1899 (hand tinted). One of the most expensive Hollywood Produced colour scenes was Eric Von Stroheim's Greed (1923)---they spent close to $1 million dollars to produce a minute of film---whole films cost less than $50K in 1923. As for talkies, there were bonified talkies prior to 1914 (kinda-sorta). They had record players synced (three dots) to play voices, music & animal noises [sound between the sprockets occured around 1925]

Yeah, that is what is left of Market Street four days after 'A Trip down Market Street' was launched. My favourite SF Boutique Hotel, Hotel D'art on Bush Street was built in 1905 and has withstood TWO EARTHQUAKES---any wonder why I insist on staying in it whenever I stay over in SF?!!!
