From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_San_Francisco_earthquake

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco, CA and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8; however, other values have been proposed, from 7.7 to as high as 8.25. The main shock epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles (3 km) from the city, near Mussel Rock. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total of 296 miles (477 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. The earthquake and resulting fire is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire, estimated to be above 3,000, is the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history. The economic impact has been compared with the more recent Hurricane Katrina.

  • Yeah, I understand that. I think my comment was referring more to a "standard technique." There were also records of steam powered cars many years before the actual automobile was "invented".

  • Not true. Molier (trip to the moon 1903 fame) had colour film in 1899 (hand tinted). One of the most expensive Hollywood Produced colour scenes was Eric Von Stroheim's Greed (1923)---they spent close to $1 million dollars to produce a minute of film---whole films cost less than $50K in 1923. As for talkies, there were bonified talkies prior to 1914 (kinda-sorta). They had record players synced (three dots) to play voices, music & animal noises [sound between the sprockets occured around 1925]

  • Yeah, that is what is left of Market Street four days after 'A Trip down Market Street' was launched. My favourite SF Boutique Hotel, Hotel D'art on Bush Street was built in 1905 and has withstood TWO EARTHQUAKES---any wonder why I insist on staying in it whenever I stay over in SF?!!!

  • What great footage!

  • I'm doing a report about that!

  • Their was a woman living at those time by the name of Ellen white, days before this earth quake happened she saw ina vision and predicted this disaster.how about that?google her name and in one of her books she wrote about it"san francisco earth quake.

  • The other movie thats very similar to this, was shot four day's before the quake! (as far as I know)

  • Amazing footage. Glad to see someone took the initiative to document this.

  • There is a movie called The Thirteenth Floor. it is very good The Thirteenth Floor shows life back then and mixes it with modern times and then future, reminds me of the Matrix! just get it and watch it, you will not be disappointed.

  • LOL, really? I' will assume that you are really young, and therefore don't know much. So, the art of adding sound to film wasn't done until about 1923. So what happened was, they would shoot their videos, then add sound to them post production. Thats why this was the age of silent films..because they had no choice haha. Color wasn't added till much later.
